Beginning in 2017, the following collections form the basis of the Buchstaben-Bibliothek:
The Schmidt Type Specimen Collection
The former Bremen vocational school teacher has over several decades compiled hundreds of rare and valuable type specimens from all over the world. With the kind financial support of the state of Thuringia, this unique collection has been given over to the Pavillon-Presse.
The Rutherford Typography Collection
Jay Rutherford, professor emeritus, taught in the areas of graphic design and typography from 1993 at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His collection of books and magazines on type and typography, also compiled over decades, has found a new home as a long-term loan to the Pavillon-Presse. This collection includes primarily English and German titles, comprising current works as well as those reaching back to the 19th century.
The Former In-house Library
Built up since the inception of the museum, this collection includes hundreds of books and periodicals on various themes: artist’s books, graphic techniques, printing, paper and processing, machine books, publishing and the like.
The Herrmann Collection
Titles from the private collection of the chairman of the board of directors may be provided for use in the museum or for digitisation. This collection comprises further type specimens and other works on typography, as well as rare periodicals.
Gifts or long-term loans for the expansion of the Buchstaben-Bibliothek are gladly accepted.
